Several intense sequences involve a large angry bear that attacks the main characters - which are even more so when seen in 3-D - and ( possible spoiler alert) a possibly disturbing but mostly comical transformation of a mother into a bear. All in all it is a very good family film with enough laughs and excitement to satisfy everyone.Parents need to know that Brave is pretty scary for a "princess movie," especially for kids under 7 and/or those who are very sensitive to peril. There are a lot of funny moments and thrilling action sequences that kids will love.

The animation is as good as ever and it's a good period piece even for an animated film. That causes me to call this film light entertainment.

There are some moments when the characters show strong emotions but nothing that powerful or touching ever happens. The departure from all things reality is the main reason “Brave” pales in comparison to its Pixar counterparts. The supernatural elements of this film are something the other Pixar films didn't have to use in order to move the story forward. Merida has to hide her mother from her bear-hunting father and figure out how to change her mother back into a human before it's too late and she is stuck as a bear forever. Merida gets the witch to cast a spell that she thinks will change her mother's mind about marrying her off but instead changes the queen into a bear.

Merida runs away out of anger and is lead through the woods by the wisps to the witch. Her mother however squashes her plans and orders that she satisfy her obligations. So in order to dodge her fate, she declares herself eligible to compete for her own hand and wins. Being married off would mean a life of princess responsibilities which she wants no part of.

Merida is due to be married to whomever wins her hand in a competition between the first born of the three neighboring clans.
